Insurance Basics

How chiropractic insurance coverage typically works
  • Some insurance plans cover chiropractic adjustments only.

  • Some plans cover both chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy together, under the chiropractic benefit.

  • Some plans cover physical therapy services (e.g., therapeutic exercise, manual therapy) for an additional fee.

  • Insurance coverage varies by individual plan and policy.

What is included in your visit

Your visit may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustment and/or manual therapy

  • Condition-appropriate rehabilitation exercise guidance

  • Therapeutic modalities, when clinically indicated

Note: Insurance companies may not cover all services performed during an appointment. Coverage depends on your plan benefits.

Why coverage may differ from expectations
  • Your plan may have a deductible that must be met before benefits apply.

  • Some plans have visit limits or require pre-authorization.

  • Some plans only cover certain service codes and not others.

What we bill vs. what insurance covers
  • We bill for the services provided.

  • If your plan denies a service or applies it to deductible, the balance becomes the patient’s responsibility.

Patient responsibility

Ultimately, patients are responsible for understanding their benefits at the time of service, including:

  • Verifying benefits and coverage

  • Understanding deductibles and coinsurance

  • Confirming referral or authorization requirements (if applicable)

  • Paying any portion not covered by insurance

During a visit, services may include chiropractic adjustment, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, or other movement-based services when clinically appropriate.

Some insurance plans cover only the chiropractic adjustment, while additional services (such as physical therapy, including but not limited to manual therapy or therapeutic exercise) may not be included under your chiropractic benefit and may result in an additional charge. Coverage depends on your specific insurance plan.

If the practitioner you’d like to work with is not in network with your insurance, not accepting new patients with your insurance, or you do not have coverage for a service you’re interested in, we are still more than happy to see you! Our patient services team would be happy to help you navigate your options and discuss self-pay discounts and care package options when insurance is not being billed.

Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA's)

We accept Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance for those who have been in motor vehicle accidents. Simply book a new patient appointment or an extended visit if you are a current patient. Please include in the appointment note that you are seeking care for a MVA when scheduling. We will get in touch with you to gather some accident-related information in addition to our standard patient paperwork.

Referrals are not required for chiropractic or acupuncture treatment for MVA-related claims. Massage only requires a referral if you plan to seek massage services outside of our office.

Oregon Health Plan (OHP)

The Oregon Health Plan (OHP) physical health plans all have different referral requirements for chiropractic care.

  • Trillium: Trillium does not require a referral for either chiropractic or acupuncture care. However, the “chiropractic care” only covers the chiropractic adjustment. Any additional services (physical therapy) that may be performed, require a referral. You can still come in for care without a referral, but there will be an additional fee if physical therapy services are provided.

  • OHSU Moda: No referral required for chiropractic, acupuncture, or additional services (physical therapy).

  • PacificSource / Providence / Open Card: A referral is required for chiropractic, acupuncture, and additional services (physical therapy).

  • Kaiser: A referral is required for both chiropractic and acupuncture care. Additional services, such as physical therapy, are not covered by OHP Kaiser.

  • Care Oregon: we are not currently in network with Care Oregon.

If the practitioner you’d like to work with in is not In Network with your insurance or you do not have coverage for a service you’re interested in, we are still more than happy to see you! Please book a New Patient appointment, complete our intake paperwork, and we can review our discount for paying at the time of your services.

Complimentary Benefit Check

As a courtesy, we offer new patients a complimentary benefit check to help you understand your coverage before your visit. While insurance benefits can be complex, we aim to make the process as clear and smooth as possible.

How It Works:

  1. Schedule your initial appointment and get a confirmation email of your appointment

  2. Complete your intake paperwork (at least 24 hours before your visit) - you will receive a link to your intake paperwork via email

  3. We review your insurance details prior to your appointment

Patients are responsible for verifying their benefits and coverage with their insurance provider. We encourage you to review your member booklet and contact your insurance company to confirm coverage and provider network status. Always request a reference number.

To request your complimentary benefit check, please schedule your first appointment or contact us at (503) 236-8701 or email us at info@neighborhoodchiro.com.

Established Patient Insurance Plan Changes

If you are an existing patient and your insurance has changed since your last visit, please send us your updated information at least a week prior to your next appointment. Providing updated insurance information in advance helps prevent delays or surprises at your visit.

You can send photos of your insurance card, or you can type out the name of the policy holder (if not yourself), the member ID, and the group number, and email us at:
